PICKING CHARACTER NAMES

My goal when choosing character names is to choose a name that I haven’t previously used in any of my books. When I am in the early stages, I will choose the first name that pops into my head and then begin working on the character arcs and story concept. However, I almost never stick with the original name.
There are several reasons for this. Sometimes, I will find that I have two characters that begin with the same letter and I will try to change that. When I am stumped, I pull up my Facebook friends list and will begin to search to see if a name stands out—I have done this for first and last names. I have gotten so many names that way. I have also used Google to search boy or girl names that begin with a certain letter to help me decide.
Besides doing a random search, the character personality or even a trait will help me decide on a suitable name. Ultimately, the name has to fit the character and it also has to feel right to me. If it doesn’t feel right, I will change until the name fits like a glove. Almost always, my mind is churning on the character and so when I am reading articles or other books, I will see a name that pops or that is different and I will find a fit.
In The Adoption Surprise, the twins’ names were instant—right on the tip of my tongue. Their names inspired their character traits and personalities. However, both Kelsey and Zachary went through name changes until I found the perfect match. And even after a story is written, I have changed names during the editing process. It really all depends.
