EXCERPT
Nothing she’d seen in Paris had compared to this.
Hearing Jase walk up beside her, she realized she’d forgotten he was there, absorbed as she was in the beauty and tragedy of Windsor. “I have no words, Jase. The home itself gone, with grass growing in its place, but the columns refusing to fall down and die—I’ve never seen anything like it. I want to weep at its demise and yet I can’t, although the beauty that remains is so poignant.”
He nodded, a not-quite-smile in his eyes. “I can’t feel sorrow at its destruction when I’m here because its resilience is so strong. Look at those columns. How have they stood for over one hundred and twenty years after the fire that destroyed the house? They seem determined to stand, to live.”
“I can’t find words to describe them.”
Jase stopped, looked into her eyes. “It’s like trying to describe love.”
He drew in a tremoring breath, and she wasn’t sure if the shakiness was because of the awe-inspiring overwhelm of Windsor or because he so feared the word love. At least, in a romantic sense.
“We can walk the perimeter of the home site,” he said, moving closer to the ruins and breaking the mood somewhat. “Stay behind the fence, because the columns are in a state of decay, and debris is always falling. This place is beautiful and inspiring but also could be dangerous.”
Dangerous? But how beautiful would it be to see the ruins from within the square of columns? To imagine visiting Windsor at the height of its glory and climbing its now-missing stairs to enter the home and experience its grandeur and beauty? Pretend to dance in its ballroom with the love of her life?
Besides, she didn’t think any bricks would fall or columns suddenly collapse, having stood there over a century.
She nodded toward the grassy center. “Take the risk.
