ABOUT THE BOOK
On the outskirts of Laurel Cove, North Carolina sits a quiet lake tucked into gentle mountains carpeted with the brilliant colors of autumn. Grief binds the lake’s only residents into an unlikely family, where old and new love build a bridge between loss and hope.
For years, best-selling author Cora Bradford has worked tirelessly to tread the unrelenting waves of grief in solitude. That is until a new neighbor moves in down the road and threatens to disrupt what she’s carefully preserved of the life she once knew. Will God ever answer her prayer for peace and calmer waters?
Following a scandal, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Luke Bassett escapes to the one place in the world he’s ever experienced peace—his mother’s cabin on the lake where he spent childhood summers. But the memory of her and the mistakes he made are hardly peaceful. To make matters worse, he gets off to a rocky start with his bitter, but breathtakingly beautiful, neighbor. Was running away from the life he’s always known the biggest mistake of all, or the beginning of something he never knew he wanted?
Spunky, opinionated, and recently widowed Ina McLean is alone for the first time in over ninety years. When Cora and Luke come together to care for their only other neighbor, Ina’s belief in God’s goodness through life’s ups and downs works to restore their hope in learning to live—and love—again.

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHTS
Cora Bradford
Cora Bradford, under her penname Paige Price, is a New York Times best-selling author of a dozen mystery novels. But she’s not written a single word since suffering tragic loss in an accident almost three years ago. Having also lost both of her adoptive parents years before that, she has no other family left. So, she prefers to be alone in her cabin by the lake surrounded by memories and haunted by her nightmares. Cora is caring, helping her neighbor Ina when she can. She prefers tea over coffee, finds peace in nature, and is strong-willed—especially when pushed into situations outside of her comfort zone. More than the peace she desperately seeks, she needs someone to show her how resilient she really is.
Luke Bassett
Luke Bassett has been a world-renowned photojournalist for nearly twenty years. He settles at an old family cabin in quaint Laurel Cove when he gives up traveling the world following a media firestorm over photos he took of a politician. He’s ready for a change of pace and is feeling nostalgic for when life seemed simpler. He’s tender-hearted, funny, and naturally steps in to help when his new neighbors need him. Luke enjoys kayaking, cooking, and coffee. He’s tall (six feet, five inches!), dark-haired, and handsome. He also finds himself open, for the first time, to faith and how God can guide his life.
Ina McLean
At ninety-three years old, Ina McLean’s body may be failing her but her mind is as sharp as a tack. She’s full of spunk, wisdom, and biting humor. Recently widowed after losing her husband, Charles, she’s finding it difficult to navigate living alone but leans on her strong faith. That makes her long-time neighbor Cora and new neighbor Luke a major blessing in times of need. Though she doesn’t always get it right, she means well with her advice to her younger counterparts. She’s small in stature but big on personality! Ina likes her morning coffee, watches a lot of game shows, and is a master at rummy!
And finally, I can’t leave out one of the cuter supporting characters…
Toby the Dog
Toby is Luke’s newly adopted black Labrador. Though we don’t know much about Toby’s upbringing or background, we learn a lot about his likes and dislikes. Toby loves chasing squirrels and yellow tennis balls but hates thunderstorms. He enjoys rides in the kayak with Luke but, despite how much Labs are supposed to like water, he won’t step a toe into the frigid lake. And while he loves Luke, he really enjoys spending time with Cora when he can. He prides himself in keeping an eye on things and being Luke’s best friend.
